BEST WAY TO CORRECT A YOUNGSTER

I made a post last week on my social media pages about how it’s not our place to impose choices on others.
I’d observed how people lorded it over others when they gave advice, and I didn’t think that was right and I said as much.
Here’s what I said.

Do I mean that you can’t correct an errant youngster? Not exactly. But if you must, you will want to try doing it this ways.
You’ll see this yields the expected result.

Best ways to correct a youngster

1. Don’t speak to them in a condescending manner.
It is true that by virtue of status or age, you know more than they do. I appreciate that, frankly. But don’t coat your words with haughtiness; it does great harm, and no good. That you know more than they do doesn’t make them less of a human being. So, when you decide to communicate your thoughts to them, treat them with regard.

2. Don’t disregard their views. Respect their opinions.
They may not know as much as you do, but they know something. Our beliefs are a function of the knowledge available to us and all of our actions are spurred by our beliefs. What this means is that you make an effort to see things from their viewpoint. Even if it doesn’t make sense to you, let the two-way communication be complete; listen to their views.

3. Do all things in love.
The simple act of taking out time to talk to them, shows that you care for them—at least, in a measure.

4. Finally, honour their decision.
It’s possible that even after showing them the way you think is best, they won’t agree. Well, you’d have to respect that, and if you’re much convinced that they made the wrong decision, re-strategize. Genuinely seek for ways to win their hearts. I won’t dismiss praying for them. Yeah, prayers work.

Your words may be inspired by concern and care, but if they don’t feel the love, there’s no buying into it. And that would make the whole correction harder.
Actions would always trump words but if you must speak, then do it right.

I hope this has impacted you in some way.
