Blank pages, blank life

Blank pages do not equal blank thoughts. That you haven’t written anything down doesn’t mean there’s nothing to be written. Your mind is swirling in a sea of thoughts and till you process those thoughts into words, nothing will be written—blank pages.

I will try to explain this as a writer. I’ve experienced seasons when I just go days without writing anything (something I consider worthwhile). There’s always that underlying nagging feeling that something is missing, and there’s that voice that tells me that I should be writing…but I’m not.

Most days, it’s not that I have nothing in my head (there are blank days tho’) but the struggle is always in bringing those thoughts to life— to create.

I’ve come to see that ‘nothing works until you work.’ Until I drudgingly get around to transferring the thoughts into words, I stay plagued about having empty pages. There’s a common saying in the writing and editing world: you can’t edit a blank page. Writing out the thoughts is just a first step; when I’m done, next comes the tweaking and editing till I settle on publishing something I can live with.

This is a rough picture of the process that led to this post you’re reading and in a moment I’ll relate it to you—even if you don’t consider yourself a writer.

Our lives are like empty books that get filled with things we do. With all of your latent potentials and talents, you start off as an empty book—maybe with a table of contents. Despite whatever big dreams you have, if there’s no action your dreams matter little.

As it’s with me anytime I drag on in writing, there’s always that empty feeling when you live your days not doing what you know you should be doing (drop a comment if you can relate). What I’ve learnt from my writing episodes also applies: You have to push yourself to get started.

Take an informed first step and look at the result. If it isn’t what you want, find out what needs to go (the editing process). You keep on making steps, and fine-tuning things, to achieve dreams (publishing) and that’s how you live a meaningful life; that’s how the pages get filled.

You can only be satisfied with  an active life. There’s no way you’d be happy if you feel your dreams are lying dormant.

This day, decide to take steps in the direction of your dreams. Fill up the pages of your life with the actions you take and the decisions you make and as the days progress into months, you’ll begin to see the story being written.

Remember you’re light; keep shining.
I love you!
