Imagine this scenario: You walk into the bank and the security man at the gate nods and gives a perfunctory greeting. You simply walk on without acknowledging him. The other security man in the banking hall greets also and you remember to nod. You want to make a deposit, so you fill the slip and join the queue. It’s your turn; you walk up to the counter, throw your slip and cash across the slab and wait to be attended to. You don’t consider greeting because, you believe they’re simply doing their jobs.
Look at this scenario also: you walk out of your house and flag down a keke. The driver stops and you call out your destination and he confirms it’s his route. You hop in and there’s no further communication till you drop. You pay your fare and move on. You didn’t exchange greetings with the driver and in your defence, you didn’t ever think of it.
Who do we greet? People older than us? People on a higher social pedestal?
Throwing a ‘hello, good day’ to the security man, the banker, the keke driver or the bike man, won’t demean you. It’s a courteous act. Something you should teach the children. That you’re paying them doesn’t mean you can’t be courteous.
Will it be heretic if I also suggest that you learn to say thanks after the service has been rendered? Yes, I know you’re paying them.
Treat every human nicely irrespective of whether you think you’re on a higher pedestal than they.
Funny tip: I’ve noticed that after greeting a bike man, he finds it difficult to refuse my bargain. Lol. There’s yet to be a full researched explanation to this but humour me. Out of the 20 people he has carried that day, if I’m 1 out of 4 that greeted him, don’t you think he tends to be favourable disposed to me? Let’s not put into consideration the fact that I’ve got a beautiful smile too, hahaha.
Every human wants to be treated nicely. Remember this.
